'Violated women and children with disabilities without access to justice'

Amid the annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, the Shukumisa project's #16DaysofDiscontent reports back on the performance of various government departments and civil groups.

The efforts to ensure access to justice for women and children with disabilities have been scored three out of 10.

Disability rights lawyer, Helene Combrinck said women and children with disabilities are most vulnerable and less likely to access sexuality education; meaning that they are often unaware of their rights and unsure of the acts of abuse.

Listen to the full conversation from The Redi Tlhabi Show:

We have not yet made enough progress. Overall, women and children with disabilities do not experience access to justice in South Africa.

Helene Combrinck, disability rights lawyer

Women with disabilities are often dependent on others to take care of them or to communicate on their behalf. That makes it difficult to report offences, particularly if the care-taker is the abuser.
