Nene 'stops Myeni in her tracks', rejects SAA's Airbus deal

Finance minister Nhanhla Nene has warned the Board of South African Airways that going ahead with a controversial Airbus deal will amount to financial misconduct.

Editor of SA Flyer magazine, Guy Leitch said that the rejection of the deal indicates that chairperson Dudu Myeni has been reprimanded and that the airline would recommit itself to its long-term turnaround strategy.

Leitch added that the suspension of troubled airline Skywise has given passengers a reality-check towards the financial struggles of low-cost carriers.

Listen to the full conversation, with Katy Katopodis standing in, on The Midday Report with Stephen Grootes:

It's extremely heartening that finally the untouchable Dudu Myeni has been slowed down, if not stopped entirely, in her tracks. This is the first time that a minister has stood up to her - it seems common sense is prevailing.
