With deafening noise and silence - how SA will mark Madiba's passing on the 5th
Nelson Mandela passed away on 5 December last year. To mark the 1st anniversary the Nelson Mandela Foundation is inviting South Africans to first make as much noise as possible for three minutes and seven seconds before observing a further three minutes of silence.
The combined six minutes and seven seconds reflects the 67 years Mandela dedicated to ending Apartheid.
The sound celebration is due to start at 10am on Friday with the silence to follow at 10:03am.
It will form one of many commemorations that will begin on the 4th and run to the 15th of December, including exhibitions, performances and even a comedians tribute.
The Presidency will host a wreath laying ceremony from 8am at the Mandela Statue (pictured below) and allow for the public to add to the wreaths during the day.
