16 Days of Discontent: what can the state do to eradicate the scourge?

The role of the state is integral to combatting the scourge of violence against women and children in South Africa.

702 and Cape Talk's Redi Tlhabi spoke to gender equality advocate, Lisa Vetten, about how the state can play a more meaningful role in this regard.

Listen to the conversation below:

It is a global phenomenon, what makes South Africa unusual is that the extent of our violence is much more severe than in other countries.

Lisa Vetten, gender equality advocate

These 16 days have become quite empty. They are an opportunity to rehash a lot of tired slogans and cliches which is really quite pointless.

Lisa Vetten, gender equality advocate

...It's very difficult for them [police] to reduce the number of rapes. The only rapes that I think they can make a solid attempt group to try prevent are those committed by serial rapists.
