TECHNOBYTE for 18 December 2015

Google announced its annual Zeitgeist, a look at 2015 through the collective eyes of the world on the web, offering a unique perspective on the year's major events and hottest trends based on searches conducted in South Africa and globally. This year's overall trending searches from South Africa show a mix of the serious and the silly, with loadshedding, xenophobia, sport, and various celebrities topping the overall search trends list. Murdered musician Flabba, actor Simba Mhere (who passed away in a car accident) and musician and producer Cassper Nyovest (who is trying to fill the MTN Dome) made the top of the Trending South African list. Loadshedding and xenophobia topped the Trending Current Affairs search list, showing just how much of an impact both made this year, followed by ‘demonic game’ Charlie Charlie, the French weekly publication targeted by a terror attack Charlie Hebdo and hacked US dating site Ashley Madison, demonstrating that while we may be at the southern tip of Africa, South Africans definitely have a somewhat global turn of mind.

The late Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane featured in the Trending South African, Trending Current Affairs and Trending Political Figures lists, an indication of the nation’s depth of feeling at the loss of Minister Chabane in a car accident in March. Also hitting the political figures trends list were disgraced former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi and DA leader Mmusi Maimane. South Africa Trending: OVERALL SEARCHES

Consumers continue to flock to subscription streaming video services, but providers shouldn't take viewers for granted. Instead, they are being advised to contemplate what will continue such growth.

Streaming services such as ShowMax, Netflix, Amazon Video and Hulu are already nearly as popular as traditional pay-TV services from cable and satellite, according to a recent survey from Clearleap, a digital-video tech firm that helps content companies such as HBO, the NFL and Verizon deliver streaming video to multiple screens. Last week, Clearleap was acquired by IBM to help bolster its video cloud technology portfolio.

• Millennials are out front in the adoption of streaming services. Among those ages 18-29, more than 70% use a streaming service, but only 64% have a pay-TV subscription. And one-fourth of them (26%) have never had pay TV.

A majority of U.S. consumers plan to go to Amazon.com for most of their online holiday shopping, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, even after traditional retailers have collectively spent billions of dollars to try to capture Web demand. The survey of 3,426 adults conducted from November 12 to 18 found that 51 percent plan to do most of their online shopping at Amazon this holiday season, compared to 16 percent at Walmart, 3 percent at Target and 2 percent at Macy's.
