What to expect in 2016

1 January 2016 6:00 AM

2016 is set to be a busy year with the opening of Parliament, municipal elections and ANC succession race making news headlines.

Last year's state of the nation address (SONA 2015) was the day the EFF changed the game in Parliament, when the red berets interrupted President Jacob Zuma's speech, demanding that he pays back the money spent on security upgrades at his Nkandla homestead.

This year's event is likely to be more dramatic as opposition parties are calling for heads to roll after Zuma's shock Cabinet reshuffle, which saw South Africa have three finance ministers in a few days.

The 2016 local government elections are set to test the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) after the Constitutional Court ruled that there were irregularities in the highly contested Tlokwe polls.

Meanwhile, the race to succeed Zuma as leader of the ANC and subsequently the country is expected to start playing out in the open. However, the party hasn't officially opened nominations and has denied the existence of factions like the so-called "premier league".
