Is King Dalindyebo now grasping at straws by arguing for a bail extension?

AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo will on Wednesday argue in court for a last-minute extension to his bail, after his petition for a retrial was dismissed.

Supporters of the Xhosa monarch have also argued that the trial did no take into account customary law and was an unfair adjudication process.

Meanwhile, a number of CapeTalk and 702 listeners expressed the opinion that the king should accept his fate and surrender himself to the law.

Listen to the full conversation from The Open Line, with Koketso Sachane standing in:

The Supreme Court of Appeal sentenced King Dalindyebo to 12 years imprisonment for arson, kidnapping and attempts to defeat the ends of justice in crimes dating back to the late 1990s.

If it was Queen Elizabeth in this case, how would South Africans react? We're talking about the King here, we need to protect our heritage. I don't condone the crimes, but we need to consider the era in which they happened.

Bongani, caller

The King should grow a back bone and face the music for the horrendous crimes he committed against his own people.

The only consideration is that he was anti-Zuma. His constitutional right has worked against him, so to jail he goes. Black man, if you vote DA, you are on your own.
