Eastern Cape farmer suicide highlights challenging drought season for farmers

South African farmers have been hardest hit by the ongoing drought season, with a farmer in the Easten Cape committing suicide as a result.

702 and Cape Talk's John Maytham spoke to Omri van Zyl, executive director of Agri SA, about the matter.

One of the challenges we're having is that there isn't enought fodder and feed for the farmers. It is a desperate situation we find ourselves in.

What we do as Agri SA is we set up a drought relief found where private donors make strategic interventions.

It is a situation where we have to look at the food security situation in South Africa. 61% of Southern African food comes from South Africa.
