Deep disparities between provincial matric pass rate a concern, says expert

The national matric pass rate for 2015 was announced as 70.7% - a 5.1% drop from 2014's 75.8% pass rate.

The Western Cape is the top performing province in 2015 with an 84.7% pass rate, while Limpopo (65.9%), Kwa-Zulu Natal (60.7%) and the Eastern Cape (56.8%) remain the most disadvantaged in comparison to the rest of the country.

The Independent Institute of Education's Dr Felicity Coughlan said on Wednesday that the disparity of results between provinces is a cause of concern, reflecting deep-rooted challenges of poverty, lack of resources and access.

Meanwhile, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said this is the largest cohort of learners to pass.

THE PASS RATE FOR THE DIFFERENT PROVINCES FROM DESCENDING TO ASCENDING ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Eastern Cape: 56.8%
KwaZulu-Natal: 60.7%
Limpopo: 65.9%
Northern Cape: 69.4%
Mpumalanga: 78.6%
North West: 81.5%
Free State: 81.6%
Gauteng: 84.2%
Western Cape: 84.7%
