Why the class of 2015 is the largest cohort in South Africa's history

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says despite the 5% drop in the 2015 matric pass rate compared to 2014, last year saw the highest number of pupils pass in the history of South Africa.

Spokesperson Troy Martens on Wednesday said that roughly 40 000 learners wrote exams in the 1970s, in comparison with 800 000 pupils in 2015.

According to Martens, a number of learners opt for TVET colleges, some are lost to socio-economic issues while others spend some years repeating grades.

This really speaks positively for our retention rate and we're seeing more learners come right through the education system.

Troy Martens, Spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education
