Southern Africa in need of international aid as drought intensifies - AgriSA

Agriculture South Africa (AgriSA) says a task team is looking at the impact of the prevailing drought on both job security and the price of food.

The organisation has also established a drought relief fund for farmers who have been hard hit by the severe weather conditions.

AgriSA's Omri Van Zyl on Thursday said that the drought has had a compounded effect on the Southern African region and would require at least R20 billion to alleviate the impact.

It would amount to between R15 - R20 billion to protect food production in South Africa going forward.

The idea is not to ask for international aid specifically for the country, but rather for the region.
