Young SA filmmaker offers herself for Sarah Baartman role in debated biopic

Debates about representing South African history were renewed earlier this week after rumors swirled that 'Bootylicious' pop star Beyoncé Knowles-Carter was pegged to play Saartjie (Sarah) Baartman in a new biographical film.

Though the speculation was squashed by the singer's representatives, the controversy has begged the question: Whose story is it to tell?

Local filmmaker and videographer Deidre Jantjies says that heritage of Saartjie Baartman (if ever made into a movie) should be portrayed by an African woman who understands and would do justice to her life story.

Listen to the full conversation:

Who understands Saartjie better than we do, than our experiences that we are still living?

Deidre Jantjies, filmmaker and videographer

I am of Khoisan ancestry. It is so much better for me, with a spiritual connection to Saartjie, to tell her story and give her voice back to her.
