5 reasons why the tourism industry is sceptical about the latest numbers

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed David Frost, CEO of SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism Services Association).

Frost gave the following five reasons why the tourism industry is very concerned about the latest tourism numbers:

  • The industry questions the veracity of these numbers and the timing of their release.

  • The industry does not know the source of Home Affairs’ “0.6% turnaways” number. Airlines haven’t been of much help.

  • Do these figures indicate total arrivals or tourism arrivals?

  • With our favourable exchange rate the mid-December to mid-January growth should be closer to 27%.

  • Uncertainty regarding the still looming unabridged birth certificate debacle.

This borders on the offensive! It’s fairly appalling.

Is this total arrivals or tourism arrivals?

There has been countless reports of people being turned away around the globe. Where the Minister gets his 0.6%, I don’t know.

Home Affairs tries to support its case with highly suspect statistics.

David Frost, CEO of SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism Services Association)

Even if the 7% number is correct – considering the exchange rate – we should be getting 27%. One of the impediments are these unabridged birth certificates.

David Frost, CEO of SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism Services Association)

We’re the only country in the world that requires unabridged birth certificates.
