Systematic higher education streaming 'could disadvantage poor kids'

Free State University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jonathan Jansen, has challenged the plans to channel some school children into technical or vocational streams and others into academic streams, saying that this would be unfair to children from poorer backgrounds.

Meanwhile, Ruksana Osman, a professor of education and dean of the Faculty of Humanities, on Thursday spoke to Stephen Grootes about this view and how it would affect education policy.

She explained that it is not about putting students "into a box" but giving them more options. However, she warned that if it is systematic, it could disadvantage some children.
