Cosatu is unhappy but wouldn't want the DA to take over, says political analyst

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has threatened not to campaign for the ANC in the upcoming elections after President Jacob Zuma signed retirements into law.

Sam Cowen and Africa Melane spoke to political analyst Ralph Mathekga about how this will affect the ANC in the upcoming local government elections.

Citizens are also beginning to realise the importance of local government. They are becoming more important because of the rising awareness of citizens.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

For citizens, they don't care much about where an issue belongs. We are going to see lot of issues from national (government).

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

It's quite unfortunate that this is a national issue; local government has nothing to do with tax laws but this issue in particular is going to be forged in local government.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

I think this is going to be resolved before elections. Because I think in as much the Cosatu is unhappy I don't think they are willing to hand over municipalities to the DA. I think they are bargaining at this point, I don't think they will hold back support for the ANC.

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst
