Dali Mpofu to represent Gareth Cliff in unfair dismissal lawsuit

18 January 2016 1:52 PM
Gareth Cliff confirmed that he is planning to sue M-Net for R25m for ‘unfair dismissal’, and will not let Idols auditions commence.

Lawyers for sacked Idols judge Gareth Cliff say the radio presenter intends to prevent the start of the Idols auditions if he's not reinstated.

Cliff's attorney Eric Mabuza has confirmed he plans to sue M-Net for R25 million for what he says is unfair dismissal.

The long-time Idols judge also plans to sue the network for defamation after he was accused of defending a racist Facebook post by Penny Sparrow.

Mabuza says that advocate Dali Mpofu will file an urgent application to the High Court on Cliff's behalf.

Listen to the full conversation from The Midday Report with Stephen Grootes:

M-Net has the right to make sure its image is not badly damaged, but Mr Cliff has done nothing of that sort.

He expressed a view that Ms Sparrow had the right to her own opinion. He never at any point associated himself with that view point.

M-Net accept that Mr Cliff is not a racist and only fired him for lack of empathy. He apologised for being misunderstood.

Idols judges Unathi and Somizi have also made comments deemed inappropriate by M-Net, yet no action was taken against them.
