Motsoaledi slams claims by Free Market Foundation discrediting NHI

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has rejected claims by the Free Market Foundation that a market inquiry into private healthcare was used deceivingly to control prices.

Foundation director Jason Urbach said the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme does not offer optimal healthcare access for the poor.

Motsoaledi on Thursday explained how the NHI scheme is aligned to the national development plan.

Listen to the full conversation from CapeTalk's Breakfast with Kieno Kammies:

I don't think it's any news that the minister has been against what is known as the commodification of healthcare.

Jason Urbach, Director of the Free Market Foundation

Everyone should have healthcare insurance. Our point is that government should focus on financing the healthcare needs of the poor.

Jason Urbach, Director of the Free Market Foundation

The public market inquiry allegation is a direct insult to the Competition Commission, which is a fiercely independent body.

Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Health

The national development plan states that we need to deal with the high costs of private healthcare and and improve quality at public healthcare facilities.
