NSFAS to blacklist students who don't repay their loans

NSFAS has outlined their revised funding model for the year ahead in order to address grievances of protesting students.

70'2 Xolani Gwala on Thursday spoke to EWN reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo regarding the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

Listen to the interview below:

This revised means test will be relative and more sophisticated... The means test will also seek to address the high drop-out rates by poor students as well.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN reporter

...They've been in talks with various stakeholders, including the private sector, to absorb those graduates so that they can repay their loans.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN reporter

...They will calculate how much they can repay over which period. Those who are refusing to pay will follow the normal debt recollection processes.

In another interview, Xolani spoke to NSFAS chairman, Sizwe Nxasana, regarding the details of the revised funding model and how it will be implemented.

Listen to the interview below:

At the moment, the NSAFAS means test is based on simply applying a model which tests whether a person earns R122 000 and less. But there are cases where people earn R300 000 but they support eleven children.

Sizwe Nxasana, NSFAS chairperson

The new means test will be more sophisticated compared to the model that we have at the moment... It will come into effect in 2018.

Sizwe Nxasana, NSFAS chairperson

The National Credit Act is clear on the processes that have got to be followed... It is absolutely important that we follow the process of any credit provider in collections.

Sizwe Nxasana, NSFAS chaiperson
