Race charges on DA members 'ANC election strategy', says van Damme

The ANC has filed complaints against DA MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard, DA councillor Chris Roberts, former DA member Penny Sparrow, and Gauteng sports department employee Velaphi Khumalo.

The party plans to lay charges against the alleged racists, including hate speech and unfair discrimination, at the Equality Court and criminal courts.

The DA's Phumzile van Damme on Friday said action by the ruling party is a convenient election strategy.

Listen to the full conversation from The Midday Report with Stephen Grootes:

The ANC does this every time there are elections and suddenly care about racism and appear to be quite vocal.

Phumzile van Damme, DA National Spokesperson

Racism is a serious matter in South Africa and if they were serious about the matter, they would do so on regular basis and not only when it is convenient.

Meanwhile, political analyst Ralph Mathekga says both parties are aiming for political points in the race debate.

Listen to the full conversation from The Midday Report with Stephen Grootes:

The hope of having this race issue dealt with through dialogue between political parties is off the table all together. This is simply the year of elections.

Ralph Mathekga, independent political analyst

The question is: what will the ANC achieve by pursuing this through the Equality Court?
