Four cases of typhoid fever have been identified within the Johannesburg area: Hillbrow, Yeoville, Edenvale and Palm Springs, with one patient succumbing to it.
Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu on Monday spoke to John Robbie about the symptoms and how this can be prevented.
Mahlangu said while the illness is serious, the situation is under control. She warned citizens to wash their hands after using the toilet and before preparing food.
