UJ VC urges provincial and national leaders to intervene

The current Fees Must Fall protests in nine of 23 South African universities are getting out of hand, says University of Johannesburg (UJ) Vice Chancellor Professor Ihron Rensburg.

Rensburg says vice chancellors are doing all they can to manage the situation, but the provincial and national leadership should intervene.

Yesterday private security guards employed by the university threw stones at protesting students as well as the media outside Doornfontein campus.

We have robust conversations, often volatile, but we have had robust conversations with student leaders.

At this stage it seems as if the situation is really out of hand at our universities. And that we are really desperate for leadership at national level and at provincial level.
