SABC claims public mandate is holding them back from profits

SABC leadership has cited its “public mandate” as one of the major contributors to the broadcaster's R411 million loss for the 2015/2016 financial year.

SABC's Acting Chief Executive James Aguma described the public mandate as a burden to financial gains, reports EWN's Gia Nicolaides.

James Aguma said the SABC is like an athlete whose competing against Wayde Van Niekerk and, just before the race begins, is given a 10 kilogram bag of sugar to carry with.

Aguma presented the annual report at the broadcaster's headquarters in Auckland Park along with Haludi Motsoeneng, who was controversially appointed as head of corporate affairs this week.

Aguma explained that certain policies had to be implemented due to their public mandate, but did not yield any profit.

Examples he made include, obtaining expensive sport rights and broadcasting in 11 different languages.
