The Money Show's Bruce Whitfield interviewed David Gluckman, co-founder of Lumkani, maker of an affordable, networked fire detector.

Lumkani means "beware" in Xhosa.

Smoky townships make smoke detectors impractical. Lumkani detects high temperatures instead.

All Lumkani detectors within 60 metres of a fire are triggered, creating a community-wide call to action.

We must not fall into the trap of building things that no one wants or needs - a prominent trend in Western tech start-ups.

David Gluckman, Co-Founder of Lumkani

Lumkani – a three-year-old start-up – has won several awards, including a People's Choice Award at the Global Social Venture Competition in California.
