Zuma announces state-owned pharmaceutical company

President Jacob Zuma on Thursday charted the way forward for the country in the fields of education and health.

Below are his pronouncements on the issues during his State of the Nation Address in Cape Town:

  • Education A commission of inquiry into Higher Education has been set up to address the education shortfall resulting from the 0% fees increase related to #FeesMustFall protest. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan will share the details of the shortfall funding in his upcoming budget speech.
  • Health South Africa's life expectancy has risen to 62 years of age for both men and women, an 8-and-a-half-year increase from 2015. HIV policy turn-around from 2009 saw a roll-out of testing and treatment services worth more than 3-million people living with the illness. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi will announce an HIV-prevention campaign focused on youth. A state-owned pharmaceutical company has been formed. The company's focus will be on the supply of anti-retroviral treatment.
