#SONA2016: 'It wasn’t an elevated speech, just the usual template'

President Jacob Zuma gave his 2016 State of the Nation Address where he outlined key government business for the year ahead.

Associate Professor at the Pan-African Institute, University of Johannesburg, Mzukisi Qobo spoke to John Robbie to do an analysis of the SONA speech.

The SONA speech

Many people wanted to hear Jacob Zuma speak especially around the economy. It is, however, EFF’s democratic right to protest. They raised important questions around the rules of parliament.

The key points were around the economy but they were clouded by a long lecture on history before. I thought that Zuma was building up on something that would act as a platform to inspire us to look at our challenges differently. The speech had no theme and anchor around which it was built. As such it wasn’t an elevated speech, it was the usual template where government departments give notes on what they have done.

On the Nkandla ConCourt case

We've looked very bad this week. President Zuma has been shown to be someone who is not connected to the notion SA as a constitutional state. President Zuma failed to uphold defend and respect the Constitution in regard to the Public Protector’s recommendations.

An impeachable Jacob Zuma

It is wrong-headed to look to the route of recall of Jacob Zuma by the ANC. They've allowed him free reign. The best route to remove President Zuma is the constitutional one. He is an impeachable president in the current state and I think that route needs to be tried.
