Lily Mine: Rescue mission suspended following third rock collapse

A meeting between the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) leaders, Lily Mine management and expert geologists is currently underway at the site of the Mpumalanga mine where three workers remain trapped 80 meters underground. Miners, Pretty Nkambule, Solomon Nyerende and Yvonne Mnisi have now been trapped for 10 days.

Amcu President, Joseph Mathunjwa spoke to Debora Patta (in for Xolani Gwala), saying that the rescue mission has temporarily been suspended due to further rock collapse.

The rescue operation has been temporarily suspended due to the fall of rocks. The process continuing is of experts assessing the area.

Joseph Mathunjwa, Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) President

We cannot do anything with regards to the rescue operation. It’s beyond anyone’s control. But we can’t lose hope because of that.

Joseph Mathunjwa, Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) President
