African literature in SA schools set to enrich learners' knowledge

The Department of Basic Education will introduce African literature to South African schools to enrich learners' knowledge of local writers.

Mark Heywood, the Friday Stand-In on The Redi Tlhabi Show, spoke to playwright and poet Maishe Maponya about this bold move.

Listen to the interview below:

One of the things we have failed to do is being assertive in ensuring that these writers and thinkers are introduced in schools.

Maishe Maponya, playwright and activist

For the first time, there is a desire to ensure that literature that is coming from our own continent and given the necessary exposure.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education

The people who determine the syllabus in schools are the people we should be targeting. We've left that task to politicians.

Maishe Maponya, playwright and acitivist

It's a very important investment... If we can create that market, I believe our young people will be the future investment that we'll cherish.
