R1.8 billion budget for tourism? 'We could do much better'

More than 40% of people who have come to SA to attend conferences come back for a private leisure visit within the first 5 years after the conference.

Derek Hanekom, Minister of Tourism

Most of the R1.8 Billion budget goes to SA Tourism and SA Tourism is doing a great job of marketing South Africa that why we've seen tremendous growth over the last two decades. Instead of lamenting the budget, we need to use it really well.

Derek Hanekom, Minister of Tourism

According to Premier David Makhura's State of the Province Address 2016, Homo Naledi has had massive positive implications for tourism in Gauteng, in particular, the Cradle of Mankind, Maropeng. "The number of visitors to Maropeng more than tripled to 150 000 in the month that Homo Naledi was on display."

Today the Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom will officially open Meetings Africa 2016, which is a business events trade show hosted annually by South African Tourism.
