Celebrate Water Week and help clean our rivers on 12 March with Green Beings

River Rehab is one of Green Beings top projects. They organise school kids and communities to help bring our often polluted rivers back to health and wellness.

In celebration of Water Week 2016, Green Beings is hosting their River Rehab Project at the KleinJuskei Spruit Park on Saturday the 12th of March from 8:00 - 13:00.

The RiverRehab project removes rubbish from the rivers, river banks, introduce indigenous flora, take out alien invasive species and promote a clean healthy environment for everyone to enjoy.

A lot of rubbish that is found in the rivers that we are removing comes from the roads as people throw their rubbish out of car windows. It goes down the storm drains and ends up in our rivers. The plastic and other rubbish does effect our health.

Alex Frost, Green Beings

Even if the effects are not obvious today or tomorrow, the plastic gets absorbed by fish and its chemicals leach into the soil and taken up by plants. It can cause diseases twenty or thirty years down the line.

Founder Alex Frost says they are committed to helping educate kids about our environment. Last year they took children from the Diepsloot Informal settlement for a day out in nature at the river.

The kids had a wonderful day out in nature playing and studying the creatures that live in the rivers and learning about biodiversity

Alex Frost, Green Beings

Green Beings is looking for more sponsorship to expand. Any help is most welcome.

We really run on passion. If people could come on 12 March and lend support that would be wonderful

Alex Frost, Green Beings

Alex says people coming to celebrate National Water Week at their RiverRehab day at the Jukskei River Park on Saturday 12 March should bring snacks, and tools like weed-eaters and pangas to help cut back alien vegetation. For those who cannot make it he urges supporters to promote the event on social media.

Listen to Alex explaining the vital importance of our rivers' health and how it impacts on all our lives.
