'Gordhan under attack from Zuma allies'

Several newspapers have reported on a letter sent to Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, questioning him about setting up what was alleged to be an illegal unit spying on people.

Meanwhile, former finance minister Trevor Manuel was asked what he would do if he was minister for a day and his reply caused shock-waves. He said he would write a letter and fire SA Revenue Service (Sars) Commissioner Tom Moyane.

Bruce Whitfield on Friday told Stephen Grootes that Moyane was conspicuous by his absence at the Budget Day panel and it is suggested he is part of a bloodless coup to destabilise the Treasury and get rid of Gordhan.

There are reportedly growing concerns from the likes of Manuel and Gordhan that all their hard work building Sars into a formidable unit is being undone.

Meanwhile, Moyane seems to have defied Gordhan after he was told to stop his reform process within Sars.

Though ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has come out in full support of Gordhan, he told Stephen he does not believe the President is behind the attack. However, Sam Sole disagrees and puts it in far stronger terms. He says it seems clear that Jacob Zuma and his allies are bent on hitting back at Gordhan.

Gordhan made it clear that he is going after the President's friends, for example, the Gupta family. People who made it their business to get close to the President are threatened by Gordhan.

Perhaps there are some positives. In the meantime, it remains to be seen who is in Gordhan's corner.

The battle for the soul of the ANC is finally being joined by the sensible middle ground of the party. But have they left it to late?
