The Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and other groups held an urgent briefing to tackle the university crisis and end the violence.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and other groups on Friday held an urgent briefing to tackle the university crisis and end the violence.

The panel says that if we do not do something right now, we are going to come to a situation perhaps where we have an entire university burning to the ground and then everyone loses.

Yvonne Mokgoro of the Social Cohesion Reference Group declared that the groups involved would offer universities mediation and conflict resolution services from as soon as Monday.

They are launching #AccessThuto, which means "access education" - which will seek to listen to students, academic staff and management at universities to help neutralise the conflict currently experienced at universities.

Mokgoro said there was an uncanny resemblance to apartheid days and this cannot continue.

They are calling on all like-minded citizens, business and organisations to get behind this move to help resolve the crisis.

It's not about government declaring this a crisis, it is about South Africans declaring this a crisis, said Mokgoro.
