According to The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), 36000 jobs could be lost in the mining sector.
The South African mining industry is under pressure from sinking metal prices and soaring costs which have triggered a wave of job cuts across the industry.
Mining and labour analyst Mamokgethi Molopyane spoke to John Robbie about the extent of this situation and what can be done to avert the job losses.
