Ralph Mathekga on ANC's 'crumbling walls of defense' in parliament

The African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip in the National Assembly, Stone Sizani, has been redeployed and is resigning from Parliament. Meanwhile, Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan is facing an investigation by the Hawks.

John Robbie spoke to Mapungubwe Institute For Strategic Reflection (MISTRA)'s Head of Political Economy, Ralph Mathekga about what he makes of these developments within the ANC and parliament.

On Sizani's resignation:

It's the timing that matters the most. We've seen that in parliament, opposition parties have upped their game. They have increased the pressure on ANC in parliament. When Sizani came into parliament, he came as a reconstruction of a wall to defend Zuma and we've seen that wall collapsing.

The issue here is about the crumbling wall of defense in parliament. Members of Parliament are also starting to think beyond Zuma and hedging their political future.

On the SARS Wars and Gordhan:

This is another episode of the ongoing saga about the capturing of key institutions for political gain and distribution of patronage in the country.
