Former president Thabo Mbeki has been entangled in the Sars rogue unit investigation, according to newspaper reports.
It is alleged that Mbeki's name was used to justify spying operations within the suspected rogue unit.
Political analyst, Professor Sipho Seepe doubts that Mbeki was directly involved but that government officials may have used his name to ingratiate themselves without his consent.
