Dr Emanuela Carleschi, senior lecturer at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), says getting to know students in South Africa is vital to ensuring academic success.
Carleschi believes tough and personal questions need to be raised at the start of the academic year.
At the first lecture of the first semester Carleschi says she gives her students a questionnaire which asks a variety of questions including their schooling history, ambitions and anxieties.
