There is a worldwide shortage of pilots. This is according to Marius Santos, President of the Airlines Pilots Association of South Africa, who spoke to #NightTalk presenters Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo.
Republic Airways, which operates regional flights for Delta, American and United Airlines in the United States, recently announced it is going through Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The airline subsidiary cites a shortage of pilots as being a major contributor to its problems.
In South Africa, challenges in the aviation industry in the past few years have created significant barriers to entry for younger pilots.
