President answers questions in Parliament

President Zuma said the rand was in trouble long before Nene was axed.

The fact that the rand was in trouble before Nene left, the rand was on a downslope and secondly it is not the first time that markets react when a minister is put or taken away. There is a history to that. There is nothing strange about it. The markets have their own temperament on any other issue. So there was a decision taken, very well-considered why we taking Nene and where we sending him to.

President Jacob Zuma

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has asked President Jacob Zuma directly whether the Guptas have offered any Cabinet positions to individuals.

It has become clear that power no longer sits at the Union Buildings. It has become clear it no longer sits at Luthuli House. It now sits at Saxonwold.

Mmusi Maimane, Democratic Alliance leader

My question to you Mr. President, has the Gupta family offered anybody a Cabinet position in your term of office as president?

Mmusi Maimane, Democratic Alliance leader

President Zuma denied any involvement in Jonas Gupta job offer claim.

If Jonas says he was offered (the position as Finance Minister) by the Guptas, I think you will be well placed to ask the Guptas or Jonas. Don't ask me. Where do I fit in? I had no business with that.

President Jacob Zuma

Maimane was not satisfied with the President's answers and pursued his line of questioning from the benches. Speaker Baleka Mbete asked him to sit down or leave. He and the DA caucus walked out of the National Assembly.
