Probably the best 5 Christmas songs ever

There are thousands of songs created and covered for Christmas, you could spend Christmas day only listening to the dozens of covers of "White Christmas" (Bing Crosby's is the most successful single ever with 50 million sales).

We instead have collected together only 5 that not only reflect the huge variety of types of Christmas songs but that also cover as many of the 2 000 plus years that have passed since the first one.

Please do give your comments on your favourites and who does the best versions.

No.5 Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

This might be the most contemporary song in the list but it is still 20 years old. It is also Mariah's biggest selling single,14 million copies, and requires a vocal ability that scares most from trying to sing it themselves (even Mariah has stumbled a few times).

No.4 Mike Oldfield - In Dulci Jubilo

This was recorded in 1974 but features a tune that is the oldest in our list dating back to the 14th century. It is also unique as it is an instrumental, but still manages to regularly be included in Christmas compilations. Billboard has only featured 25 instrumental #1's since they have been tracking them in the 50's. Hugh Masekela's Grazing in the Grass is one of them, while the most recent was Baauer's Harlem Shake last year.

No.3 Ella Fitzgerald - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Originally a song from the Movie Meet me in St Louis sung by Judy Garland, this is Ella Fitzgerald's cover. It is one of the most performed Christmas song so deserves to be here. There is even a Swedish and Italian version.

No.2 Simon & Garfunkel - Silent Night

This is the most traditional song but done in a most nontraditional way. Even though it was recorded in 1966, the impact of the real world news on what otherwise should be a joyous time is as chilling now as it was then. It features 6 news stories from the 3rd of August 1966 and is presented as a news bulletin over the song. Silent Night exists in 140 languages and was sung on the battlefield in German, English and French during the Christmas truce during World War 1.

No. 1 Boney M - Feliz Navidad

This is the best known Christmas song to English speakers that is not in English, it does feature an English line but for many the only Spanish they can speak is thanks to this song. Meaning Merry Christmas, a prosperous year and happiness the song was written in 1970 by José Feliciano and is rated as one of the most played songs in the world, thanks no doubt to Boney M and others many cover versions.

You did not really think you could create a Christmas playlist and not include Boney M, did you?

While we doubt you agree with these as being the best 5 ever, we do hope that despite that you have a wonderful Christmas or as José Feliciano might say - Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad.
