SA can’t afford (and don’t need) nuke energy – former energy “war room” advisor

An advisor at Cabinet’s now defunct energy war room says South Africa can’t afford nuclear energy and doesn’t require it in its power generation mix.

Anton Eberhard, Professor at UCT Graduate School of Business and member of the National Planning Commission on Energy, is calling on Government to remove uncertainty about nuclear and to “demonstrate that this initiative is not corrupt and will not be ruinous for the economy”.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Eberhard.

Studies have been done, but not released. This is telling.

Anton Eberhard

Treasury is asking serious questions. We’ve got a long way to go before South Africa will make any contractual agreements.

Anton Eberhard

Wind is down to 57 cents per kilowatt hour. I challenge any nuclear vendor to sign a long-term contract for less than R1 per kilowatt hour!

Anton Eberhard

Nuclear is not a very clever thing to do right now.

Anton Eberhard

The onus is on those who want nuclear to show that it won’t be ruinous for the economy and the initiative won’t be corrupt.
