Master Class: the art, the variations and origins of jazz

South African jazz offers a distinct sound, adding a layer to the music genre originating from the African slave trade era.

702's Azania Mosaka spoke to bassist, composer and educator Carlo Mombelli, about the genre on the day's edition of Master Class.

Listen to the conversation below:

When I teach jazz, all the roots started in Africa somewhere. It moved over to New Orleands, Cuba, Brazil. Jazz is an improvised music.

Carlo Mombelli, senior lecturer at Wits University

The thing about jazz is it's based a lot on improvising and finding your own voice. You can teach the principles of improvisation and composition, but you can't make anybody into an improvisor or composer.

Carlo Mombelli, senior lecturer at Wits University

Jazz is this baobab tree that keeps getting bigger and bigger...As musicians, you can never stop learning.

Carlo Mombelli, senior lecturer at Wits University

The art form of jazz is something of telling stories, something of spirituality...It's about the message, it's about documenting history.

Carlo Mombelli, senior lecturer at Wits University
