How to gain competitive advantage as a township entrepreneur

According to a study conducted by the Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation, the township economy is bigger than it is perceived. The study shows that if the findings of one Cape Town community were to be extrapolated countrywide, the township economy would be seen to have more than doubled since 2010.

Xolani Gwala spoke to Awethu Micro Incubators' Sibusiso Khoza about the importance of the informal township economy, as well as how entrepreneurs' business operations in townships can learn to differentiate from their competitors.

Most people's only option for employment is to go through informal economy. So it is indeed growing..

Some of them do survive. It depends on a number of things. However a lot of people are struggling because overtrading and fighting over limited resources.

The [entrepreneurs] who are surviving have long hours of operation, buy in bulk - as a result being able to offer affordable goods, [pay attention to] customer care or service, offer credit or operate longer hours.

They cannot really be competitive if they don't do bulk buying, have short operating hours or even look at main retailers to see what they are selling to differentiate.
