Addressing problematic views on communal land ownership

Rhodes University History lecturer Dr Nomalanga Mkhize and Thomas Walters, Democratic Alliance (DA) Deputy Shadow Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform, spoke to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo about the issues to consider in distinguishing the economic value enabled by the clan tenure model to communal land ownership.

The discussion follows a series of tweets by Dr Mkhize, in which she argues why the clan tenure model provides a better opportunity to enrich rural communities in their land, more than selling rural land to private companies.

Dr Mkhize discussed this in the midst of statements attributed to an Eastern Cape politician, that land in the former Transkei is dead assets because banks cannot give credit against it.

In the Eastern Cape, the Xolobeni community has been in conflict for a decade due to attempts by Australian mining company Mineral Commodities (MRC) to mine in the area.

Recently, Sikhosiphi "Bazooka" Rhadebe, Chairperson of the AmaDiba Crisis Committee, was killed by two men in Xolomeni. Rhadebe strongly opposed mining in Xolobeni.
