Reactions to President Zuma and the ANC's ConCourt briefings

Speaking to Xolani Gwala on 702 and CapeTalk, Economic Freedom Fighers (EFF) Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema criticised President Jacob Zuma's response to the Constitutional Court judgement, saying that the President selectively quoted things in the ruling that are favourable to him.

On Friday evening, President Zuma held a media briefing to respond to a Constitutional Court judgement which ruled that he failed to uphold, defend and respect the Constitution when he ignored the Public Protector's Nkandla Report.

Malema also claimed that at a National Executive Committee meeting on Friday morning, senior ANC officials had asked President Zuma to resign as President, but the he refused. In a media briefing on Friday evening, ANC Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe dismissed these claims.

This is just the beginning. We are going to fight to protect the Constitution

Julius Malema

This is a man who refused to listen to his colleagues. This is a man who believes in himself and his propaganda

Julius Malema

What they say tonight is immaterial until the National Executive Committee (of the ANC) has pronounced its protection of the Constitution or Jacob Zuma

Julius Malema

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane also spoke to Xolani Gwala, saying that President Zuma's media briefing was a sad evening for all South Africans.

It is an embarrassment to listen to a President justify actions that are illegal

Mmusi Maimane

It has now become quite clear that he (President Jacob Zuma) has no understanding of the Constitution, his oath of office, and its a fact that us South Africans must hold him to account

Mmusi Maimane

On #NightTalk with Gugs Mhlungu and Wasanga Mehana, political analyst Ralph Mathekga described that is at stake for President Zuma and the ANC, after their separate media briefings in response to the Constitutional Court's Nkandla judgement.

The problem Zuma is encountering as leader has also now become a problem of the ANC as a party

Ralph Mathekga

The ANC often doesn't want want to take instruction from the opposition. They would want to do things in their own way, even if members of the ANC may not be happy with the conduct of the President

Ralph Mathekga

If the party appears too weak in the eyes of opposition parties, then there is no guarantee the opposition will stop going after the ANC if it removes Zuma

Ralph Mathekga

You don't see the enthusiasm in defending Zuma now
