It’s time to rethink BEE, says empowerment expert Professor Phinda Madi

Professor Phinda Madi’s “Black Economic Empowerment – 20 Years Later – The Baby and The Bathwater” is the third book in a trilogy.

Madi is the first black author to have written on the subject of BEE.

In “Black Economic Empowerment – 20 Years Later – The Baby and The Bathwater” he argues that the time for a review of BEE has come.

The book features conversations with industry leaders such as Tito Mboweni, Richard Maponya, Sandile Zungu and Vusi Thembekwayo, amongst others.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Madi for his weekly business book review.

We took our eye off the ball is what I argue in the book.

Professor Phinda Madi

We are trying to create a strong, black entrepreneurial class.

Professor Phinda Madi

Herman Mashaba feels it’s time to abandon BEE altogether. But I believe it will be premature to go non-racial. You can’t address the effects of Apartheid by being colour-blind. I do, however, understand Herman’s concerns.

Professor Phinda Madi

I propose Black Economic Enablement - a truly paradigm shift. The emphasis should be on the creation of black entrepreneurs and black small and medium sized businesses.

Professor Phinda Madi

Government must remove obstacles en route to creating black entrepreneurs.
