Is there trouble in paradise in the FeesMustFall Movement?

The FeesMustFall movement is currently faced with in-fightings where female queer and feminist members where apparently excluded from a meeting held at Senate House yesterday by male members.

According to FeesMustFall activist, Thenjiwe Mswane there was a meeting held at Senate House in which they were not invited. The meeting was allegedly funded by someone who is associated with former President Thabo Mbeki.

There was a call that was made by student leaders who have gone to a meeting that was not necessarily FeesMustFall approved. FeesMustFall has always been a smart structured movement.

If there are invitations to go and speak about FeesMustFall, it’s been done by flat structured movement across all universities in South Africa.

I asked him, ‘my leader who has been excluded and who has been included’? He then told me ‘feminists are not allowed and queer bodies are not allowed’. He said this three times.

Five men strangled me and pulled me out … I came back, which is in the second picture when Chumani Maxwele is now holding me and dragging me out of the group…

Redi Tlhabi also spoke to Chumani Maxwele from the UCT Rhodes Must Fall organization about allegation formed against him for assaulting women. Maxwele’s pictures were seen all over social media manhandling a lady in a rough manner.

Comrade Thenjiwe said nothing about me beating her but the presentation is that I beat up Thenjiwe

Chumani Maxwele, UCT Rhodes Must Fall organization

I cannot condone violence, in fact I am against violence against women and I have never beaten any women in the movement

Chumani Maxwele, UCT Rhodes Must Fall organization

As a collective we have no position that says exclude women who are queer, exclude gay people or anyone based on their sexual orientation
