Over 70% Wits students vote to reopen campus

Majority of Wits University staff and students want the university to resume its academic programmes on Monday, but differ on whether there should be security on campus.

About 100 academics who were marching around campus, they were are essentially saying they support the access to quality free education for the poor. They were also saying they support the students in their cause. However they also said that they want to go back to class, provided there is no security presence.

Shirona Patel, Wits University spokesperson

However, Patel says some of the students fear for their safety. She says parents have also raised safety concerns.

Earlier today the university announced that students and staff voted for university to reopen on Monday.

Yesterday Wits conducted a poll to find out whether students want academic programmes to resume with security measures in place.

More than 21 000 students voted. More than 70% of those surveyed responded with a yes.
