Minstrels and Cape Town Mayor differ on who’s to blame for carnival postponement

The annual Cape Town Minstrels carnival parade has been postponed with wildly divergent explanations of who is to blame.

Listen to the Soundcloud clip below in which Cape Town Minstrels Carnival Association CEO Kevin Momberg accuses the City of backtracking on a promise of assistance.

Momberg claims that the decision to postpone the event was that of Mayor Patricia De Lille. “It was the Mayor’s decision,” says Momberg. “There weren’t enough buses and no VIP parking. People have to work; we won’t put on a half-hearted show.

“When we met the mayor on 23 December we told her about a host of logistical problems. We will now apply to stage the event on 17 January as moving it to the 10th would clash with the ANC’s birthday celebrations.”

Mayor Patricia De Lille responds

The City of Cape Town has reiterated that they have done all they can to support the annual minstrel parade events and have kept to their end of the agreement.

Mayor Patricia De Lille says meetings have been had with the Cape Cultural and Carnival Committee to ensure that all logistics and plans were in place to ensure a successful event.

Up until yesterday, 4 January 2015, the City was under the impression that the event was going ahead as planned.

“To say that the City has not been supporting the committee, or that the date change was made for the City, is not true and completely disingenuous of the Committee. City officials have met with the committee numerous times over the past few weeks and we have done all we can to support them.”
