The overall matric pass rate dropped to 75.8 percent for the first group who wrote the new curriculum exams.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga expressed her disappointed in the 2.4 percent drop compared to the pass rate in 2013 - something most education experts had predicted, blaming the new caps curriculum which was introduced. Gauteng was the best performing province with 84.7 percent --- still down however from the previous year.
