Master Class: the history of watches and time

Our concept of time as we understand it can be attributed to how much we can get done within a specific period, with a clock and watch close by.

702's Azania Mosaka spoke to master horologist and clock forensics expert, Jacques Arzul, about a concept that is integral to all our lives.

Listen to the conversation below:

Dust and people's hands are what I look at when dealing with watches that are brought to me.

Jacques Arzul, horologist and clock forensics expert

The first thing to attend to is the rust, especially when a clock has not been services for 20 or 30 years.

The stick in the sand causes the shadow to go clockwise, which is why mechanical clocks imitate this movement.

Jacques Arzul, horologist and clock forensics expert

At the moment, there are too few people with the inclination to go into this line of work and stay in it because this is a work of love. You don't get rich as a watch-maker.
