There's not a lot OLX and Gumtree can do about fraudsters, says consumer journo

The best that online classifieds sites, like OLX and Gumtree, can do is educate users about internet scammers.

This, according to consumer journalist Wendy Knowler, who says that not a lot can be done by the platforms themselves.

They can issue lots of detailed warnings and repeatedly try and arm the consumer not to fall for them. That's the only way that we're going to stay on top on the fraudsters.

According to Knowler, it is the online anonymity of fraudsters that makes legal action difficult to execute.

She says it is better to empower consumers with knowledge, that will help them avoid deception.

It is much better to invest energy in making the consumer scam-proof, than trying to track the scammers.
